Awards and recognitions can be seen as an indicator of stakeholders’ perception of a company based on its activities or the quality of its communications. Such accolades contribute to shaping its reputation in the public domain and among key opinion-formers and stakeholders.

Performance in 2005

In 2005 Novo Nordisk received a number of honours and awards related to its performance and its Triple Bottom Line approach to doing business.

Below is a list of awards recorded for corporate performance and in individual countries.

Corporate awards

  • Ingeniøren and Institut for Konjunktur Analyse: Danish employer of choice. Novo Nordisk is seen as the most attractive employer by engineers and graduate engineers; a clear number 1 in Ingeniøren’s (Danish engineers’ trade magazine) annual image survey.
  • Universum image survey: Novo Nordisk came out as employer of choice among engineering and science students, with twice the score of the second-place employer. Novo Nordisk also came second among economics students.
  • Copenhagen Business School: Special award as most successful company with regard to branding activities.
  • Danish Institute for Human Rights: MIA Prize 2005. The award is given for the best efforts within Diversity in Working Life.
  • Reputation Quotient (RQ) reputation survey: Novo Nordisk was rated number one in the top-tier group of six companies in the survey, which measures the Danish population’s view of companies.
  • US Endocrinology Association: Novo Nordisk researcher Pierre De Meyts from Hagedorn Research Institute in Denmark received the ‘Frontiers in Science’ award for his insulin research.
  • IR Magazine: In May 2005 Novo Nordisk was named and awarded as the best large Danish company in the area of investor communications.
  • Dow Jones Sustainability Index: Novo Nordisk was ranked Super Sector Leader in healthcare. Novo Nordisk received the following citation: "[Novo Nordisk] is the sustainability leader of the pharmaceutical industry and has an excellent overall sustainability performance. Its commitment to sustainability has been integrated across the whole company in terms of business levels and segments. The company shows industry leadership through a clear priority setting, recognizing business dilemmas and a stringent risk management process. Concerning environmental issues, Novo Nordisk is positioned among the best in the industry with an excellent reporting and good performance figures. The company has a long tradition for actively seeking the dialogue with stakeholders and engaging in partnerships to prevent diabetes. It publicly outlines and explains its position on controversial political and ethical issues such as access to health, animal experimentation, gene technology, human rights, intellectual property rights and stem cells. Moreover, it focuses on identifying and developing talent in the organization and actively supports diversity."
  • Sustainability Forum Zürich: Lars Rebien Sørensen received the Sustainability Leadership (SAM) Award. Each year the prize is given to an individual for personal leadership or pioneering work in implementing the principles of sustainability within the private sector.
  • Carbon Disclosure Project: Novo Nordisk was honoured as ’Best in Class’ in its approach to addressing the challenge of climate change and one of 60 leading companies included in the Climate Leadership Index. The selection of Novo Nordisk in the index is based on the company’s reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and an independent assessment of Novo Nordisk’s strategic response to the risks and opportunities of a carbon constrained environment, as well as the quality and effectiveness of programmes put in place to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions.
  • FSR (the Danish Association of Chartered Accountants) and Danish financial newspaper Børsen: Novo Nordisk’s 2004 Annual Report won the award as ‘Best sustainability report’ in Denmark’. "They have challenged the boundaries for ‘conventional’ sustainability reporting. Novo Nordisk has incorporated other important dimensions into its annual accounts: What the company wants to achieve, customers and market, and how it is going to get there. That is new. That is highly innovative. And the senior management is clearly and visibly setting the direction, both in terms of defining vision and targets, and in being accountable for what it reports to the public," said the jury.
  • IDF Europe: Novo Nordisk received the award for best contributor for the third year in a row.
  • Best Danish company for equality: Novo Nordisk was singled out for producing guidelines explaining how equal opportunities can be encouraged. All Novo Nordisk managers received these guidelines in 2004 and should have put equality on the agenda as part of discussions with their employees. In addition, Novo Nordisk has ensured that equal opportunities are part of the company’s Balanced Scorecard – in other words, that the goals for equality are on an equal footing with the company’s business goals.

Novo Nordisk Algeria

  • Jeunesse Sportive Kabily handball team: Award as main sponsor
  • Société des Médecins: Award for helping each time they need to organise an event for patients
  • Federation of Diabetes: Award for sponsorship and assistance
  • Federation of Boumerdes City: awarded for help provided to patients with diabetes
  • Marathon organisations: Award as sponsor.

Novo Nordisk Argentina

  • Great Place to Work Award: NN Argentina has been selected for the past three years among the Top 10 companies to work for and number one in the pharmaceutical sector. This year's third place marks an improvement from last year's number six. In particular, Novo Nordisk has scored the highest in terms of honest business leadership, social responsibility and safe working environment.
  • Chaco Network Award, the Argentinean Society of Diabetes: In recognition of social responsibility, customer services and scientific support.

Novo Nordisk Belarus

  • Christian Orthodox Metropolitanate of Belarus: Certificate for social responsibility.
  • Children's Diabetes Association: ‘Safe partner 2005’ for community activity.
  • Health and Success (medical journal): Certificate for contribution to medical education.

Novo Nordisk Brazil

  • Great Place for Women to Work.
  • Great Place to Work in Brazil.
  • Great Place to Work in Latin America.

Novo Nordisk Canada

  • Province of Ontario: for efforts to promote healthier lifestyles in school children.
  • Sick Kids Foundation: for support of residents' research.

Novo Nordisk’s Clayton Factory

  • Recognition by the college system for donating land to build the Workforce Development Center (used for education & training).

NNE, Denmark

  • 2005 Facility of the Year Award: Novo Nordisk’s new NovoSeven® factory in Denmark built by the engineering company NNE was awarded for an outstanding example of creative design within a super fast-track timeline for project execution, application of modular engineering for greater control and flexibility, and dramatic and pleasing architectural features throughout the facility. The award was made by representatives of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering.

Novo Nordisk Egypt

  • 'Save the children' programme: Certificate for five volunteers. The program is an educational programme to enhance youth skills to enter the job market as qualified employees. The project taught around 160 students (age 13) in weekly sessions that lasted for 10 weeks.

Novo Nordisk Germany

  • Golden Tablet 2005: For the second year in a row, German diabetologists nominated Novo Nordisk as the best pharmaceutical company. The prize was presented to Sales Director Peter Keysers during a ceremony in September 2005 at the Deutsches Museum in Munich.
  • The most innovative product 2005: Novo Nordisk received the award for the most innovative product for Levemir®. The prize was presented to Christian Look, product manager for Levemir®, during a ceremony in September 2005 at the Deutsches Museum in Munich. Organiser of the survey among German diabetologists was the ‘Pharma Barometer’, leading print media for marketing and sales.

Novo Nordisk Italy

  • Premio Mercurio D'Oro: Given to companies that are reliable, honest and entrepreneurial.

Novo Nordisk’s Koriyama Factory

  • Fukushima Prefecture Labour Bureau: Good working environment award in recognition of ongoing good working environment projects. Improvements such as setting up light sensors in corridors and entrances, and building a disabled access ramp and designated parking space once again impressed local authorities in Japan. Since winning a Superior Labour Hygiene Company Award back in 2003, work has continued to improve the factory, and a dedicated project team was established in 2004. The project team identified problem areas, gathered ideas for improvements and put the changes into practice.

Novo Nordisk Russia

  • State Duma of Russia (lower parliamentary chamber), Health Care Committee: Recognition for conducting ‘Diabetes Days’ in State Duma
  • State Duma of Russia (lower parliamentary chamber), Health Care Committee: Recognition for ‘Regional Activity’

Novo Nordisk Sweden

  • Best Workplaces in Europe: Novo Nordisk was ranked as number eight in Sweden.

Novo Nordisk Taiwan

  • Taiwan Diabetes Association: Award for social responsibility
  • Taiwan Endocrine Association: Award for social responsibility
  • Taiwan Diabetes Educator Association: Award for social responsibility
  • Diabetes Patient Club in NTUH: Award for social responsibility
  • Honey Club of Kaohsiung City Hospitals: Award for social responsibility

Novo Nordisk Ltd. (UK)

  • Best Workplaces in Europe: Novo Nordisk came in among the top 20 in the UK.
  • Novo Nordisk Ltd. also received a Special Award for Corporate Social Responsibility in the UK and on a European basis (based upon participation in Sweden and the UK) and received a Special Award for Pride, the highest ranking pharmaceutical company.

Novo Nordisk Ukraine

  • The regional state authorities of Rivne, Ukraine: Novo Nordisk Ukraine was awarded an honorary diploma and medal.
  • Lugansk regional society of disabled people and diabetic patients: Official testimony for support.

Novo Nordisk USA (NNI, Princeton)

  • Best place to work: NNI was named best place to work among large companies in New Jersey. The award was handed out by NJBIZ Magazine and The Best Companies Group.
  • DiversityInc: NNI was one of 25 noteworthy companies for diversity.
  • Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation: Martin Soeters, President of NNI, was named ‘2005 Humanitarian of the Year’.
  • PharmaVOICE magazine: Selected Martin Soeters, President of NNI, as one of the ‘100 Most Inspiring People in the Life Sciences Industry’.
  • Healthcare Institute of New Jersey: Elected Martin Soeters, President of NNI, ‘Executive of the Year’ (NJ High-Tech Hall of Fame).
