Novo Nordisk is committed to changing the huge increase in the number of people with diabetes. Prevention is the most effective weapon in this fight, and that is why we have initiated a number of activities to help raise awareness of diabetes and the importance of good health. One of these initatives is aimed at the heart of the company: the people in Novo Nordisk.
Four key messages
The NovoSund (NovoHealth) prevention programme motivates employees to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Employees can participate in various activities that support the programme's four key messages:
Eat healthier
Exercise more
Avoid stress
Stop smoking
Employees stop smoking
Currently NovoSund is active only in Denmark, where 56% of the company's employees are based, but it will eventually become global. The company-sponsored smoking cessation programme, which included 700 employees, has been very successful. After 12 months, close to 47% of them were still not smoking - a very high success rate.
Other activities in 2005
To encourage exercise, several activities took place in 2005, including a company relay run in which nearly 2,500 employees took part in a five-kilometre run as part of a fitness initiative with other companies. NovoSund also carried out a basic health evaluation questionnaire survey of all 12,000 employees in Denmark.
In 2006 senior vice presidents at Novo Nordisk will use the survey data to develop targeted interventions for improving employee health in their business areas.
