Coagulation is a complex process involving a number of proteins, called blood coagulation factors, acting together in a chain reaction. Haemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder which occurs when this chain reaction is defective because one of the coagulation factors, either factor VIII or IX, is missing. Haemophilia is usually treated by replacing the missing coagulation factor, but some people with haemophilia react to the replacement factor, causing the formation of antibodies - also known as inhibitors.

Novo Nordisk markets NovoSeven® - a recombinant factor VIIa that does not replace factor VIII or IX but enables coagulation to proceed in their absence. NovoSeven® can therefore be used in people that have developed inhibitory antibodies to replacement therapy with factor VIII or IX.

Novo Nordisk is currently conducting clinical trials with NovoSeven® in people with haemophilia with inhibitors and in surgical and emergency bleed situations outside haemophilia.
