Diabetes care products and servicesDiabetes is a disorder characterised by increased blood sugar levels resulting from insufficient or missing insulin production and the body's decreased ability to use insulin. Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed most often in children and young adults, but can occur at all ages. In type 1 diabetes, the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed and no insulin, or too little insulin, is produced. To control blood sugar levels, daily injections of insulin are required for life. Type 2 diabetes typically occurs in adults over 40 years of age. In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, and the insulin is not used effectively in the body. While diet and exercise are the foundation for controlling blood sugar levels, most people with type 2 diabetes also require treatment with tablets and insulin. Novo Nordisk offers the broadest portfolio of diabetes products in the industry and an extensive range of user-friendly pen devices for injecting insulin. We have also developed a range of diabetes services, including educational materials for both healthcare professionals and people with diabetes. Growth hormone therapy products and servicesHuman growth hormone (hGH) is a protein produced in the pituitary gland in the brain. It is carried around in the blood and has effects throughout the body. During childhood, growth hormone is needed to grow to normal adult height. In adults, the main effect of growth hormone is the regulation of metabolism. Novo Nordisk markets Norditropin® SimpleXx®, a human growth hormone for the treatment of growth hormone deficiency in children, growth hormone deficiency in adults, Turner Syndrome and other indications. Norditropin® SimpleXx® is the world’s first liquid, premixed human growth hormone in a pen system. Novo Nordisk has recently launched a new prefilled injection device, Norditropin Nordiflex, the world's first liquid growth hormone in a ready-to-use disposable pen, which ensures the easiest treatment possible for people with growth disorders. Novo Nordisk is continuously investigating new indications, including intrauterine growth retardation and indications where the anabolic effect of hGH will improve the outcome of disease, severe asthma in children and complicated fractures. Haemostasis management products and servicesCoagulation is a complex process involving a number of proteins, called blood coagulation factors, acting together in a chain reaction. Haemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder which occurs when this chain reaction is defective because one of the coagulation factors, either factor VIII or IX, is missing. Haemophilia is usually treated by replacing the missing coagulation factor, but some people with haemophilia react to the replacement factor, causing the formation of antibodies - also known as inhibitors. Novo Nordisk markets NovoSeven® - a recombinant Factor VIIa that does not replace factor VIII or IX but enables coagulation to proceed in their absence. NovoSeven® can therefore be used in people that have developed inhibitory antibodies to replacement therapy with factor VIII or IX. Novo Nordisk is currently conducting clinical trials with NovoSeven® in people with haemophilia with inhibitors and in surgical and emergency bleed situations outside haemophilia. Hormone replacement therapy products and servicesThe menopausal transition is a natural phase in a woman’s life which generally occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, when production of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone gradually ceases. Women frequently suffer from significant complaints such as hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disorders, mood swings, and dryness of the vagina or other mucous membranes. Over time, the hormonal deficiency can also lead to an increased risk of fractures due to osteoporosis. Hormone replacement therapy is the most effective treatment for climacteric symptoms of women in different stages of the menopausal transition. Nowadays, women suffering from climacteric symptoms can choose well-tolerated and efficacious low-dose hormone replacement preparations. Novo Nordisk is one of the world's largest manufacturers of hormone replacement products, offering a range of low-dose medicines for the effective treatment of menopausal symptoms tailored to the individual needs of women: - Activelle® - a low-dose oral continuous combined HRT for the early initiation of an effective bleed-free treatment.
- Novofem® - a low-dose oral sequential combined HRT for the early initiation of an effective treatment with regular withdrawal bleeding.
- Estrofem® - an oestrogen-only therapy for women who have undergone a hysterectomy.
- Vagifem® - a local oestrogen therapy for symptoms associated with vaginal dryness such as painful intercourse, itching, burning and soreness. Click here to read more about our hormone replacement products and services.
